Nature and human field trip
Trip diary:
7 am - VAS school buses carrying more than 200 students left Sai Gon for the suburban area of Cu Chi. After more than 2 hours travelling, we reached Cu Chi where there are greenish rice fields with buffalos grazing nearby and the fragrant smell of wildflowers in a cool morning. Unlike learning in classes every day, on that day the students were walking on the bumpy basaltic dirt roads in the countryside, enjoying nature and fresh air to get ready for a day’s farming experience. After listening to teachers about the structure of peanut plants and how to harvest them, the students flocked to the immense peanut field to have a close look at the plants, perhaps for the first time, after a second of hesitation. Having uprooted the peanuts and shook the mud off them, the nuts wowed the student ‘farmers’ with open mouth. With the support of the teachers and farm owners, within a short period of time, the students harvested quite a lot of peanuts to take home as a gift for their parents. At the end of the peanut harvesting activity, although the students were sweating heavily, they were happy to try the nuts which were uprooted and cooked by themselves.
11 am - After having fun with peanut harvesting, we left the farm for Thanh Nam Tourist Site. The students had lunch, played in the water park and visited the zoo with a variety of species from white tigers, porcupines, cobras, peacocks and so on to help them understand more about the animals and ecosystems.
1:30 pm - The program ended and the teachers and students came back to the school. It was a special and memorable day for the students of VAS with a lot of practical activities.
The extracurricular activities always offer student a chance to refresh themselves with lively lessons learned from practical experiences. See you all in the next fieldtrip!
