VAS Nurtures Young Talent with Professional Sporting Events at the 2019 VAS Olympics
The finale of the 2019 VAS Olympics closed on April 30th, but what remains are the games we played with excitement, the moments we burned ourselves up for the love of sports, and the sweet taste of victory. All of those feelings are still lingering in the memories of the more than 1.500 athletes who participated this season!
VAS is proud that for the very first time our annual Olympics took place on our own “home court”, the Sala Mega Campus, with fully equipped spacious areas for competing athletes and playgrounds for families, which attracted the participation of almost 4,000 parents and students. We are even prouder of the excellent performance and games with good sportsmanship and teamwork by all the athletes across the soccer field, swimming pool, running track and chessboard.
This year, the VAS Olympics finale was the competition of our most excellent athletes from four campuses competing in five core sports: soccer, basketball, chess, track, swimming and cheerleading. In the speech during the Opening Ceremony, Mr. Clive Keevil – Executive Cluster School Director of Sala Mega Campus shared:
"Before the siren signals the start of the finale games, students, I’d like to remind you that: we honour winners and their achievements; but in a competition, above all, it is sportsmanship that matters. And your greatest victory is overcoming yourselves! Conquering your fears, pushing past your limits and exceeding your own records are real victories. Later in life, when you part from your teachers and parents, when you face your challenges, when you feel self-doubt, just remember how you stood up from challenges! That’s also the greatest lesson that sports teach us.”
After 180 minutes of exciting and intense games, the final winners belonged to the group from Garden Hills – Phan Xich Long – Le Quy Don with 24 Gold medals, 13 Silver medals and 11 Bronze medals. VAS also congratulated and awarded individuals and groups who excelled in each competing category.
This is the 5th VAS professional sporting event – the VAS Olympics, which aspires to help students from Kindergarten to High School showcase their talent and sportsmanship. Participants learn about international competition regulations so we can discover and nurture those who have a talent for sports. At the same time, this event ignites their passion for sports and other physical activities to develop the core values for VAS students, including excellence, teamwork and honesty.
The 2019 VAS Olympics even expanded to family fun activities, so every family member could physically enjoy, have fun and connect with each other. Through this event, VAS expected to spread out the passion for sports to students and parents, both in and outside of VAS. It’s good to pick a suitable sport and pursue it on a regular basis because “a healthy body breeds a healthy mind and vice versa.”
